Leadership and Transformation: A masterclass by Joseph Jaworski: co-author of Synchronicity: the inner path of Leadership and Presence: An exploration of Profound Change in People with Betty Sue Flowers: 11th April 2008: London

Joseph Jaworksi is Chairman of Generon Consulting, an international consultancy that focuses on the most vital challenges facing organisations. Their approach is based on the premise that complex organisational and social issues can only be addressed successfully if the effectiveness of the methodology used advances more rapidly than the challenges themselves.

Over the past 20 years Joseph and his colleagues have been at the forefront of developing tools and techniques for effecting profound innovation and change. They have co-founded a methodology for fostering breakthrough thinking and action which is as the “ U “ Process. This comprise three major stages of observing the current reality [SENSING]; retreating and reflecting to allow an inner knowing to emerge [PRESENCING] and acting swiftly in order to bring forth new reality [REALIZING].

In this one day masterclass Joseph will :

  • Discuss how transformation can be fostered by attitudes of genuine openness and curiosity, supporting reflection and inquiry and tapping into the deepest sources of individual and collective aspiration;
  • demonstrate to senior leaders how their own personal journey is inextricably linked to their organisation’s future
  • enable senior leaders to explore the deeper dimensions of transformational leadership.
Few would argue that foresight is central to the task of exercising leadership.  It is the mark of a leader, taking initiative, going out ahead to show the way, it's what gives the leader his or her "lead".  Can foresight be reliably developed in rising leaders and in collectives of those charged with leadership?  If so, by what process?

This domain -- the deeper dimensions of enhanced decision making, the capacity to sense and actualize emerging futures -- lies largely unexplored in current management research and in our understanding of leadership in general.  It is a domain that is both deeply personal and inherently systemic.  It requires examining who we are and the source from which we operative, both individually and collectively."

So says Joseph Jaworski's   the author of , "Synchronicity: The Inner Path of Leadership" (Berrett-Koehler Publishers) .  Joseph ‘s story as a thought leader began after he turned his back on a  successful law career. A series of connections with remarkable people including  David Bohm, one of the principal architects of quantum theory, to John Gardner, founder of Common Cause -- led him to create the American Leadership Forum, a community-based leadership program.  From there Joseph relocated   to London to lead Royal Dutch/Shell's scenario planning group -- an elite unit responsible for farsighted global trend analysis. Following stints at the Organizational Learning Center at MIT, and with the Centre for Generative Leadership in Hamilton,  he set up Generon a Global Leadership Consulting Company.

So what does Jaworski  think about leadership?

Most leadership programs begin with a description of the attributes of the leader -- a leader has vision, a leader has courage, a leader inspires others. All of that's fine; it's very important. But what's leadership really all about? To me, leadership is a journey toward wholeness. A leader's journey starts by looking inward to understand, Why am I here? What is it that I'm here to do?

Before you can lead others, before you can help others, you have to discover yourself. Today a leader can't impose himself/herself on others. He/She  needs to  make themselves  available to others. And nothing is more powerful than someone who knows who they are.

Once you can be that way, all those other wonderful traits will  flow from that. They become apparent. Authenticity -- if you know what you're all about and where you're heading, you become more authentic. Credibility -- if you know who you are, then people trust you.

The traditional view of leadership talks about leadership as a package, but it looks at the outside of the package. I'm talking about starting with what's inside the package.

On Leadership and Transformation

There is considerable pressure on organisations to deliver results and quality.  Many also  understand that the things they have  tried don't go far enough.  Jaworski believes that

“ the way to transform an organisation  begins with personal transformation. And the way to personal transformation begins with the kind of leadership I'm talking about.

I believe that the top leadership team  in an organisation  has to commit itself to a journey of self-discovery. And the leaders have to provide space for the other people in the organisation  to do the same. If you want a creative explosion to take place, if you want the kind of performance that leads to truly exceptional results, you have to be willing to embark on a journey that leads to an alignment between an individual's personal values and aspirations and the organisation's values and aspirations.
